The Practical Test starts with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. After this the driving test begins which will include some specific manoeuvres. The driving part lasts about 40 minutes and throughout the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including during the specific manoeuvre and independent driving section. The test itself is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely demonstrating a good knowledge of The Highway Code. You will be asked two vehicle safety check questions, more commonly known as the "show me" and "tell me" questions. These are basic checks a driver should carry out to ensure the vehicle is safe for use and you will need to answer both of them correctly to avoid a driving fault. After this you will be examined on your general driving and on a reversing manoeuvre which could be reversing around a corner, turning in the road or reverse parking. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop. The examiner will give you directions during the test which you should follow as well as a section of independent driving. The routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and include a range of typical road and traffic conditions. The examiner will be looking for an overall safe driving standard.
